BILLY BUDD SAILOR (AN INSIDE NARRATIVE) BY HERMAN MELVILLE, SIGNED BY BENJAMIN AND DEBORAH ALTERMAN. (MOUNT HOLLY): MARRIED METTLE PRESS, 1987 LIMITED EDITION bound with patinated bronze spine treated to resemble the weathered metal found on 19th-century sailing vessel; boards solid wood bound with doubled linen cords physically laced through tunnels in the board, handmade paper, letterpress printed from handset type on dampened rag with a gray-blue hue and prominent deckle edges; signed by printers Benjamin and Margaret Alterman on the colophon hand-printed from handset type; text set in 13-point Van Dijck with display capitals cut by William Caslon in the 18th century; woodcuts hand cut by Deborah Alterman. Every element of this production—from the papermaking and marbling of the endsheets to the typography and the complex metal-and-wood binding—was executed by the Altermans. The edition uses the definitive text edited from the original manuscript by Harrison Hayford and Merton M. Sealts, Jr. .
