Mountbatten (Louis, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma), Royal Naval Officer, British Statesman and Viceroy of India (1900-1979) and Brookes (Horace Albert), Chief Petty Officer, Telegraphist P.J.6141, d.1968. An extensive archive of correspondence and related material. The collection includes c100 letters, mostly m/s from LM to HAB relating to their shared professional interest in Naval telegraphic communication and technological development of Naval signals and wireless. Both men were members of The British Institution of Radio Engineers, and the correspondence which spans 5 decades (1930-1970) illustrates their friendship and relates to personal as well as scientific topics and offers a different perspective to 20thc history. February 1949, related books etc, plus a photocopy of No 5 Group Operation Order No. B976, Operation Chastise or the Dambusters Raid, 16/17 May 1943 by 617 Squadron. RAF Bomber Command, plus: - A Morse Code signal key, a Crystallite Detector and a ‘Douglas’ Combined Protractor and Parallel Rule, and a signal flag, plus: - A colour full length portrait of LM in full ceremonial dress signed and dated 1937 in silver frame with embossed coat of arms, 455 x 305mm overall, and four further portrait photographs, 3 signed and 2 framed, plus general ephemera.
