Accompanied by a printed document dated April 2, 1840 (4to, 2 pp.) mentioning slavery and urging the French parliament to make a treaty with Haiti. Andre-Nicolas (Auguste) Levasseur (1793-1851), French naval officer, author and diplomat, best known as Lafayette's secretary during his 1820s tour of the United States and later as French consul in Haiti, where he worked to stabilize post-independence relations between the two nations. His writings offered Europeans a vivid portrait of early American democracy, while his Haitian service reflected France's evolving diplomacy toward the Black republic.
