ERNEST HEMINGWAY (1899 - 1961) American writer, a Nobel prize winner and author of For Whom the Bell Tolls, A Farewell to Arms, The Old Man and the Sea, and other classic novels. HEMINGWAY'S ADVICE TO AN ASPIRING WRITER: "THE ONLY WAY TO LEARN TO WRITE FICTION IS TO WRITE IT..." Wonderful content A.L.S. "Ernest Hemingway", 1p. 4to., Key West Feb.12, 1935 to a "Mr. Duffield" who seeks Hemingway's advice on a career as a writer. In part: "...If you can make a living any other way don't go into the newspaper business. It is badly paid and over-crowded; papers being consolidated have thrown many good newspaper men out of work and you would be up against terrific competition to get a job. The only way to learn to write fiction is to write it or try to write it and you have as much time for that with your present job - and the advantage of eating regularly. I hope I do not sound discouraging - but you asked for my advice. With best wishes and much luck to you - whatever you do..." Near fine condition. Hemingway himself had had several stints as a journalist. After high school, he reported for a few months for The Kansas City Star before leaving for Europe to drive ambulances for the Italians. In 1921, he worked as a foreign correspondent in Paris, and he also reported from the Spanish Civil War. His experiences in Spain formed the basis for his "For Whom the Bell Tolls." Hemingway was also present at the Normandy landings and the liberation of Paris. By the time he wrote this letter to Duffield, the newspaper business had completely changed, with foreign field offices and "stringers" removing the glamour and adventure from the occupation that had started Hemingway's career as a novelist.
