THOMAS SULLY (1783 - 1872) American painter who studied with Stuart and West, a portrait painter of over 200 notables of his time. Good content A.L.S. "Tho. Sully", 1p. 4to., Philadelphia, July 22, 1853 to CHARLES LANMAN (1819-1895), noted author, government official, artist, librarian, and explorer. Lanman has advised Sully that he is dissatisfied with a portrait. Sully tries to remedy the situation: "I have not the least idea of visiting Washington; and if you do not expect to be here do you think it practicable for me to reform the defects by written instructions? If there be no means of correcting the blunder, send me back the picture...you must endeavor to dismiss the affair from your memory, and pardon me for having given you so much trouble..." Light toning, else very good.
