Autograph Letter Signed ("René Magritte"), 2 pp recto and verso, 8vo, Brussels, November 25, 1960, in French, to Andre Bosmans, on personal stationery. The Belgian Surrealist comments on the true nature of art and discusses the persistent contradictions between expression through language or through image; argument which would form the core of his article, 'Le rappel a l'ordre' (The Call to Order), published in Rhetorique, May 1961. An amateur cinematographer, Magritte comments here on early silent and suspense films such as those of Chaplin and Fantômas, and at length on a scene in Hitchcock's Psycho, released the same year. Magritte writers: "Hickcock [sic] is a highly talented imbecile: his last film, Psycho, proves it." An abridged version of this letter was published in Harry Torczyner's Magritte: Ideas and Images, p 47.
