CHAGALL, Marc. Autograph letter signed ("Marc Chagall"), to Madame Coquiot, Paris 15 September 1923. 1 page, 4to, stationery of 15 Av. Des Sycomores. In French. CHAGALL LOOKS FORWARD TO A SWISS RETROSPECTIVE ON HIS WORK. After returning to Paris earlier in 1923, Chagall plans to gather some of his paintings for an important retrospective. He begins by teasing Coquiot about not hearing from her: "Where have you been?...Are you still interested in what happens to me?" Then he goes on to tell her that the Basel gallery, "Kunsthalle de Hale invited me to do a big exhibition. They have gone to great lengths to bring together my major paintings from 1907-1923, gathered from all corners of the world. And ideally I would like to ask you to send some of the paintings that you have been trying to sell. For example: 'La benediction nuptiale,' 'Les amoureux,' 'Les fleurs rouges,' 'La Fiancee,' etc. etc. which you can give them on loan for use in the exposition. Shipping and insurance can be charged to the Kunsthalle. Wherever you are, dash off a friendly word to me..." Not until 1933 did Kunsthalle mount the show referred to here.
