The overall condition is good, consistent with age. 1 sheet is hinged to a mat at a reverse lateral edge. The sheets measure from 12.8 x 15.7 cm to 50.8 x 35.2 cm. Adolph von Menzel (1815-1905) Adolph Menzel was born as the son of a lithographer in Wroc?aw. In 1830 the family moved to Berlin, presumably due to the prospect of a better education for their talented child. Menzel’s father died only two years later, so the young boy felt obliged to take over the family business. Nevertheless, Menzel briefly attended the Academy of Arts in Berlin and finally decided to become a self-taught artist. In 1853, Menzel became a member of the Royal Academy of Arts, which was followed by his appointment as professor in 1856. When Menzel painted the coronation of Wilhelm I in 1861, he was promptly accepted by the fine courtly society. Menzel died in 1905 and was honored by Wilhelm II, who arranged a state funeral and followed the coffin with his family. Examples of Menzel’s artistic output are mainly preserved in museums, including the Nationalgalerie in Berlin, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen in Dresden, the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne and the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
