Dimensions: Height 27 cm Wide 16 cm Depth 10 cm Weight: 6804 grams The bronze figure depicts the Buddha seated in vajrāsana on a double lotus pedestal, his right hand lowered in the earth-touching gesture (bhūmisparśa mudrā), while the left hand rests in his lap in dhyāna mudrā. This iconic posture alludes to the moment of enlightenment, when the Buddha calls the earth to witness his triumph over Māra. The face is softly modelled with gently downcast eyes, arched brows, and a faint smile conveying calm introspection. The hair is arranged beneath a tall, ornate crown, indicating a crowned Buddha type associated with late medieval Burmese and Arakanese Buddhist imagery. The figure is richly adorned with a beaded necklace and chest ornament, reinforcing the regal, transcendent aspect of the Buddha as universal sovereign (cakravartin). The surface retains extensive traces of original gilding, particularly visible across the torso, arms, and pedestal, contrasting with the dark bronze ground. The lotus base is finely cast with rounded petals above a moulded lower register, and the sculpture is hollow-cast, as visible from the underside. Bronzes of this type are characteristic of Arakanese Buddhist production during the 15th century, a period marked by strong artistic exchange between Burma, Bengal, and eastern India. The combination of crowned iconography, refined modelling, and surviving gilding reflects the devotional and courtly context in which such images were commissioned. Condition: Good condition overall. Surface wear, abrasion, and losses to the gilding consistent with age and ritual use. Minor casting irregularities and surface corrosion.
