작품 상세
Dimensions: Height 14 cm Wide 22 cm Depth 9 cm Weight 2652 grams Rectangular brass betel nut box raised on four short feet, the hinged lid and all exterior surfaces finely engraved with dense scrolling vegetal and floral ornament. The decoration is arranged in bordered panels, displaying a confident and rhythmic hand typical of early maritime Southeast Asian metalwork. The lid opens to reveal a plain interior, consistent with its utilitarian yet ceremonial function. Such boxes were used for the storage of betel nut and related ingredients, integral to social and ritual practices across the Indonesian archipelago. The refined engraving and balanced proportions suggest production for an elite or courtly context, aligning with objects attributed to the Lotoan tradition associated with the Jolo Empire’s far-reaching trade networks. The surface shows an attractive, even patina with areas of wear and minor losses to the engraved decoration, consistent with age and long-term use. The hinges remain functional. Overall, a rare and early example of a betel nut container from Borneo, illustrating the sophistication of 14th-century regional brasswork.
