작품 상세

Dimensions: Height 17,1 cm Wide 13 cm Depth 6,5 cm Weight: 557 grams The Buddha is shown seated in vajrāsana (lotus posture) upon a multi-tiered pedestal with finely incised lotus-petal decoration and a hanging textile motif at the front. His right hand reaches down in bhūmisparśa mudrā (earth-touching gesture), calling the earth to witness his enlightenment, while his left rests in his lap. The figure is dressed in a close-fitting monastic robe (sanghāti) draped over the left shoulder and finely chased with a diamond pattern along the hem, falling in a straight line down the chest and back. The serene face is framed by arched brows and downcast eyes, the hair arranged in small curls surmounted by a pointed usnīṣa flame finial. The large ears extend down to the shoulders, typical of Lao and Northern Thai Buddha imagery. The figure sits on a broad stepped base, its sides decorated with alternating bands of foliate and geometric motifs. Silver Buddhas of this type were highly prized in 19th-century Laos, particularly in Luang Prabang, where silver-smithing was refined and closely tied to royal and temple commissions. The present example demonstrates both the devotional function and the skilled artistry of Lao silversmiths, who translated canonical Buddhist forms into works of enduring elegance.
