Beauties of Several Dynasties. China. Prob. Ming dynasty. 16th c. or later. Colors and ink on silk, mounted as hand scroll, clasp and scroll sides from green jade. 35x1210cm; picture size: 29,3x819cm. The 60 ladies are shown in the elegant fashion of the Sui or Tang dynasty in typical surrounding and with attributes. Often they are corresponding, like Luo Fu Nü, a beauty of the time of the Three Kingdoms, who is facing Xi Shi wringing her reeled silk threads. Su Ruolan, a famous poetess of the Jin dynasty is shown at her weaving chair. Two ladies sitting and reading are the Qiao sisters of the late Han dynasty. The princess Le Chang keeps a broken mirror. The other half she has given her lover, in the hope to recognize each other in the turmoil of the war times. Sign.: Shi Fu Qiu Ying. Gourd seal: Sho Zhou. Condition A/B. Traces of use, water margins, losses. Above the ladies their names and a short information in typical handwriting. Sign.: Wen Zhengming (1470-1559) and two seals: Zheng Ming.
