Inspired by Yusof Ghani's passion for theatre, Wayang is an abstract expression that includes the traditional wayang kulit element. This painting features Yusof Ghani's signature colour palette of yellow, red, and green with bold outlines in charcoal to form abstract figures. It is composed in a landscape orientation and parallel to the cinema. Perceived as 'Topeng with movement', Wayang ponders upon life challenges and deceitfulness among members of the society. Wayang was first displayed at Galeri Citra in Kuala Lumpur in 1997, after a transitional show called Topeng-Wayang at the Jenkins Johnson Gallery in San Francisco in 1997. Subsequently, Wayang II was exhibited at Artfolio Gallery in Singapore in 1998. Yusof Ghani received his B.A. (Graphic Art) from George Mason University in Virginia, USA (1981) and a Master of Fine Art (Painting) at the Catholic University, Washington USA (1983). He unveiled his Tari series in 1983 in an exhibition at his university before following it up at Galeri Citra in Kuala Lumpur in 1989.
