Playing with the dynamics of dark, angular, and satirical forms, Shafiq Nordin’s early works engage with sociopolitical issues, painted in the style of German expressionist woodcut prints. The dramatic scene depicts a formidable beast (playing violin) set in a dark landscape, alluding to materialistic forces at play. The ape and fishes are mesmerized by the mellifluous rhythm, and awed by the violinist's performance and charisma. Shafiq’s imaginative works reflect his observations of contemporary society, revealing a captivating story and sociopolitical message using strong imagery.
