VERY EARLY BURMESE BRONZE HEAD OF BUDDHA CAKYAMUNI Magnificent Late Toungoo Period Burma (1347-1593) Head of the Buddha in sandcast bronze, with enameled eyes and a beautifully pacific gaze, having distinctive headband and squared elongated ears, pierced for missing jewels. Removed by force from the body without harm to the head, having remnants of gilding and color at the hairline, blackened coiffure composed of thousands of tiny curls, set on a custom museum display stand. 29" tall including stand, 22 1/2" tall head alone. Fine condition. Cakyamuni is Sanskrit, meaning The Jewel of the Cakyas. The Cakyas are people of the tribe to whom Siddhartha Gautama (who later became Buddha) belong.
