The place of Jose Joya in the pantheon of Asian abstraction is secure. As one of the country's offical representatives in its first participation at the Venice Biennale in 1964, the selection of a non-objective artist was truly a groundbreaking act, and an endorsement of Joya as being one of the leading creative powerhouses of his time. This very rare work from 1959, which is fresh to the market, having been in the same family since it was exhibited in and acquired from the Philippine Art Gallery, bears the thickly impastoed paint and broad gestural brushstrokes of abstract expressionism at its apogee.
