Weight: 257.9 g Dimensions: Height 7.4 cm, Diameter 11.8 cm Irabo ware, literally meaning ‘rough textured’, was produced in Korea during the Joseon dynasty in the early seventeenth century for Japanese tea masters, who commissioned these vessels from the Yangsan kilns. Its unpretentious character, and particularly its coarse surface, resonated strongly with the late sixteenth century Japanese tea aesthetic, which valued simplicity and rusticity. In homage to the original Korean models, a number of Japanese kilns deliberately emulated the rough and humble appearance of Korean stoneware. Some of these wares displayed characteristic yellowish markings in honey and pale ochre tones, giving rise to the subcategory known as ‘ki irabo’, or ‘yellow Irabo’. The present bowl exemplifies this stylistic lineage.
