A LARGE LACQUER FUBAKO (LETTER BOX) DEPICTING DHARMACHAKRAS WITH METAL FITTINGS, EDO PERIOD Japan, 19th century. Of rectangular form with rounded corners, the roiro ground is finely decorated in gold iro-e takamaki-e and hiramaki-e to depict three dharmachakras, which are repeated on the sides of the box. The box stands on feet decorated with openwork clouds and is fitted with a gilt-metal band with cartouches showing leafy scrolls. The lid’s interior depicts lotus petals on a roiro ground embellished with nashiji. The interior box is finished in roiro with gold fundame rims. Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Condition: Good condition with minor wear, tiny nicks, small dents, few chips to the edges, and obvious age cracks to the foot.
