작품 상세
Antique original Japanese woodblock print by Tsukioka Kogyo (1869-1927) titled Ninin Shizuka (Two Shizuka), from the series One Hundred Nōh Plays (Nōgaku Hyakuban). This piece is an original from the Taishō period, 1922-26. This Noh play translates to “Two Shizuka”, referring to a young shrine maiden, who is possessed by the spirit of Lady Shizuka Gozen, the lover of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Her spirit divides into two dancers, which is why Kōgyo depicts two nearly identical female figures performing a solemn dance together. The tall headgear (Eboshi), layered elaborate robes, and paired choreography are specific to this play. This print captures the quiet dignity, elegance, and haunting beauty of classical Noh theatre. This piece is matted and framed under acrylic in a faux, bamboo frame. With frame, it measures 15 inches x 19 inches. This was acquired from a Metro Washington DC estate.
