Hojo Yasutoki from the Series Instructive Models of Lofty Ambition Japanese Color Woodblock Print Print number 25 from the series Instructive Models of Lofty Ambition depicting the armor-clad H_j_ Yasutoki __ __ (1183-1242), the third shikken (regent) of the Kamakura shogunate, being admonished by the seated Taira no Moritsuna ____ for wasting his time in coming to the aid of his younger brother H_j_ Tomotoki __ __ (1193-1245). Designed by Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915), who contributed 20 works to this didactic series emphasizing moral and historical lessons. As scholar Henry D. Smith notes, "The style of Kiyochika's offerings to Instructive Models of Lofty Ambition was decorous and even stiff, as befitted the didactic emphasis of the whole series."
