UTAGAWA YOSHITORA: TRIPTYCH OF YOSHITSUNE'S DOWNHILL CHARGE AT HIYODORIGOE IN THE BATTLE OF ICHINOTANI By Utagawa Yoshitora (active about 1836–1887) Japan, 1843-47 Color woodblock prints on paper. Vertical oban triptych. Each signed Ichimosai Yoshitora ga, censor’s seal: Mura; publisher Sanoya Kihei (Kikakudo). Title Yoshitsune's Downhill Charge at Hiyodorigoe in the Battle of Ichinotani. Depicting the famous battle at the Taira fortress of Ichi-no-Tani in 1184. Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his men attack the castle from the mountains above, rushing down the steep hill of Hiyodorigoe to mount the surprise assault. The warriors gallop and slide down the nearly vertical hill at right while below, another squad of Minamoto warriors attacks the castle by land simultaneously. At lower left, arrows rain down over the attackers as some samurai begin scaling the wall, one warrior falling backwards after being shot with an arrow. SIZE of the sheet ca. 38 x 25.7 cm (each) Condition: Very good condition with some wear, fair colors and impression. The paper with some browning and soiling. Minuscule holes and creasing to the edges. Museum comparison: A closely related triptych is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, accession number 11.41392a-c.
