A PAIR OF FINE AND RARE EMBROIDERED 'WATERFALL' PANELS Meiji period Worked in fine silk threads, using sashi-nui (long and short stitches) to depict a mountainous scene of a meandering stream and a magnificent waterfall amidst dense plantations, jagged rocks and various types of trees such as pines and maple, with details meticulously picked out in intricate and realistic polychrome shades, a deer with its head tilting gently upward and the other with its head elegantly lowered next to a running stream elaborately embroidered to portray the movement of water, unsigned, framed and glazed; the other panel similarly depicting a waterfall amidst a mountainous scenery with rich plantations on the mountains and irregular layers of rocks, a myriad of trees on the mountain displaying varied shades, all delineated through the interweaving of polychrome threads, the turbulent stream and craggy rocks at the bottom thickly embroidered in interlaced threads to convey movement and texture, unsigned, framed and glazed. 179.5cm (70 11/16in) x 67.5cm (26 9/16in).
