BIZEN HIKOBEIJŌ SUKESADA (ACTIVE CIRCA 1598-1599) A Broad Bizen Katana with Fine Lacquer and Silver Mounts Momoyama period (1573-1615), dated 1599 Sugata (configuration): honzukuri, iorimune with a wide mihaba, extended kissaki and torii-zori curvature Kitae (forging pattern): itame hada based in jinie Hamon (tempering pattern): flamboyant chōji-gunome midare in nioi and nie with ashi, yō, sunagashi and kinsuji Bōshi (tip): midarekomi Nakago (tang): ōsuriage with three holes and kiri file marks, signed Bizen no kuni no jū Osafune Hikobei [jō Sukesada], and dated Keichō yonen hachigatsu kichi[jitsu] (An auspicious[day] in the eighth month of 1599) Habaki (collar): one-piece gilt-copper Nagasa (length from tip to beginning of tang): 24 1/2in (62.2cm) Motohaba (width at start of tempered edge): 1 1/2in (3.8cm) Sakihaba (width before tip): 1in (2.5cm) In a shirasaya (wood storage scabbard) with inscription and attestation by Dr. Honma Junji; the nineteenth-century koshira-e comprising a gold kinji lacquer saya decorated with hollyhock crests in gold hiramaki-e, the top section finished in wide ribs of black and brick red, the section around the koiguchi with scrolling vines in low-relief red lacquer on a black ground, the koshira-e mounted with matching silver fittings decorated with cherry blossoms carved in relief with gold highlights, including a tsuka with panels of blossoming cherry trees in high relief against a tight nanako ground, tsuchime-ji fuchi-gashira with cherry trees with highlights in gold takazōgan, signed Katō Hideyoshi and with a kaō; kozuka and wari-kōgai decorated to match the tsuka; and a rounded square plate ishime-ji tsuba with a branch of blossoming cherry in gold, silver, and shakudō takazōgan with a gold-inlaid signature Accompanied by certificate no. 221945 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword), dated October 2, 1968, designating it as a Tokubetsu Kichō Tōken (Especially Precious Sword); certificate no. 388589 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword), dated June 21, 2011 designating it as a Hozon Tōken (Sword Worthy of Preservation); and certificate no. 464051 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword), dated November 2, 2011, designating it as a Hozon Tōsōgu (Sword Fitting Worthy of Preservation) (5)
