A CALLIGRAPHIC INSCRIBED EMERALD RING, 19TH CENTURY, PERSIA This striking Persian ring centres on a substantial oval emerald, its rich translucent green surface finely engraved with flowing calligraphy. The inscription, rendered in elegant script, is framed by delicately scattered punch-marked dots, enhancing the visual texture and lending depth to the luminous stone. The polish of the emerald allows light to permeate the surface, intensifying its vivid colour and highlighting the precision of the engraved lines. The stone is set within a sculptural silver mount of bold architectural character. Deeply fluted shoulders rise upward in radiating ribs, clasping the emerald securely within a serrated bezel. The strong vertical movement of the mount contrasts beautifully with the smooth, domed surface of the stone, creating a harmonious interplay between metal and gem. The silver has developed a soft patina over time, further accentuating the vibrant green of the emerald. Rings of this type held both ornamental and symbolic significance in 19th-century Persia, where inscribed gemstones were prized for their devotional, talismanic, or personal associations. The confident scale of the stone and the robust modelling of the mount reflect the enduring Persian appreciation for expressive calligraphy combined with bold, sculptural form.
