AN AKODA-NARI KABUTO (HELMET) Muromachi period (1333-1573), late 15th century The black-lacquered bowl of typical akoda-nari form, constructed of 28 vertical plates, remounted with a modern o manju jikoro laced in mauve, green, and red kebiki odoshi, the exaggerated fukigaeshi (turnbacks) and mabisashi (peak) applied with stencilled leather and gilt chrysanthemum and karahana mon, fitted with gilt kuwagata dai, kuwagata, and sun disc maedate (forecrest); with modern lining. 49.5cm (19½in) long.
