Louis Audemars gold hunter No. 15.556 with strike-work and minute repetition. Made in about 1884. Cf. Louis-Benjamin Audemars: His Life and Work; Hartmut Zantke; p. 426 Provenance: Collection Hartmut Zantke Six-body, stepped, engine-turned Louis XV 18ct red gold case with big slide at side, five piece hinges, glazed movement signed “GRANDE SONNERIE Repetition a Minutes No. 15.556 Louis Audemars BRASSUS SUISSE” on dome. Engraved “Sonnerie-Silence” in centre of dial. External slide in middle section to activate minute repetition. Diameter 64 mm. Enamel dial with Roman hour numerals and Arabic minute circle. Signed: ”Louis Audemars Brassus SUISSE” under 12 o’clock. Blued steel spade hands. Case was added later by L. B. Audemars. Gilded bridge lever escapement with two barrels and stop-works, strike-work completely jewelled with crimson rubies. Strike work mechanism under dial with honed and bevelled steel levers, compensation balance with gold screws with blued Bréguet balance-spring and counterpoise lever, double-crown winding-system for the two barrels, self-strike for hours and minute repetition with two hammers on two gongs. Functional, very good condition with minimal traces of wear Comment: Unusually large heavy gold hunter. Movement and case in top Audemars quality. Weight: 371 grams. Audemars used the same caliber in the watches illustrated at No. 49 and 111. Audemars delivered this strike work caliber to several watch companies, including Constant Piguet.
