Louis Audemars gold hunter No. 12 with one-minute Tourbillon, fusée movement, detent escapement with sliding-gear, power reserve, made by Auguste Grether, Ponds de Martel, movement dated about 1850, later case. Cf. Louis-Benjamin Audemars: His Life and Work; Hartmut Zantke; p. 30 Provenance: Collection Hartmut Zantke Six-piece, engine-turned, heavy 18ct red-gold case with ribbed central section, five-piece joints. Gold dome signed: “Chronomètre Régulateur à Tourbillon No. 012. A.Grether Ponds-de-Martel.” Poussoir in the circular pendant button to open the hunter cover, original glass, diameter 60 mm. Enamel dial with Roman Numerals, at 12 o’ clock, Power reserve indicator, blued Bréguet-hands. New silver movement and lever with chain and fusée, decorated with Geneva stripe, key winding system, separate bar with screwed settings for the third wheel (petite moyenne). Fine steel Tourbillon with birds head, Grether 2. The fourth-wheel pinion is fixed to the Tourbillon. Compensation balance with gold screws, blued Bréguet spiral. The index spring is mainly there to induce the isochronism and less as a regulatory device. Sliding-gear detent escapement. All parts are polished and bevelled. The power reserve was added later. Functional, very good condition with minimal traces of wear Comment: Auguste Grether from Ponds-de-Martel (1817-1879) was one of the most famous makers of Tourbillon watches. He was trained in Le Locle, where he was born, and worked for such well-known companies as Girard-Perregaus, Ditisheim and Jürgensen. The Tourbillons he developed (Grether1, Grether2 and Grether3) were used for many of his customers’ watches. Grether 3 served as a model for the famous maker of Tourbillons Albert Pellaton-Favre. The Tourbillon illustrated is a very good example of the great skills and the high quality of Swiss watchmakers in 19th century.
