Gijsbertus Jan Sijthoff was born in Delft on August 6, 1867. He was a student at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. After his studie he got educated by B.J. Blommers. He made paintings, watercolors and lithographs of portraits, interiors, exteriors, cityscapes and landscapes. Sijthoff was a member of 'St.Lucas' and 'Pulchri', the Dutch Art Circle and the Laren-Blaricum Association of Visual Artists. He gave painting lessons to his wife Johanna Bastiana van Rijswijk, A.F.A.M. Hiel and Maria Ch. J. Sterre de Jong. He passed away in 1949. The watercolor which is shown in this description did belong to a private collection of paintings and watercolors from 19th and 20th-century painters. The image of a Japanese woman is painted around 1910. The size of the watercolor itself is 54 bij 38 cm. Including the frame it measures 73 by 58 cm. The work is lowerright signed.
